Selo Rotunda – St. Nicholas Church
In the beautiful nature in the middle of the meadows in Goričko, where there are many possibilities for cycling, hiking and tasting Prekmurje cuisine, you will see an unusual circular, secluded small church. It is the Rotunda of St. Nicholas and the Virgin Mary, a remarkable monument of circular pilgrimage architecture and Gothic painting. Legend has it that the church originally belonged to the Templars and was built in the first half of the 13th century. Due to its construction characteristics, the circular shrine is most likely the remnant of a supposedly larger medieval building complex. From the first painting, the composition of the march and the gift of the three kings, which was to be created in the first third of the 14th century, has been preserved. The artistic character is outlined by the artistic depiction of the Passion of Christ in the fresco form. The entry into the Rotunda is symbolic of Christ’s coming to Jerusalem, and when you visit this small church in the village of Selo, you will see why.
