Grad Castle: The largest Baroque castle in Slovenia

Follow in the footsteps of the famous Knights Templar and influential noble families who shaped the history of the largest Baroque castle in Slovenia! Grad Castle proudly watches over the picturesque village of Grad, the oldest settlement in Goričko, after which it was named.

It is impressive even before you enter the castle building, owing to its large surrounding park. There you can admire some of the oldest tulip trees in Slovenia, as well as plane trees, honey locusts, red beeches, hornbeams and oaks.

The castle courtyard reveals yet another surprise, as its western part is higher than the eastern part due to the shape of the castle hill. At that very spot you may feel a special kind of energy emanating from the ground, which some describe as a rush of heat or pins and needles. But even if you cannot feel it, the view of the multi-story arcade corridors is sure to take your breath away.

In addition to the pentagonal Baroque design of the castle, built in the 17th century, history enthusiasts will recognize elements pertaining to various periods, from Gothic to Romanticism. The castle’s story began to be written by the Knights Templar as early as the 11th century, and was later continued by various noble families, each of whom would leave their own unique mark.

The Grad Castle is not only a paradise for those researching history; it is also the right place to discover the natural and cultural heritage of the Goričko region. You are welcome to visit the local craft workshops (from blacksmithing to ropemaking and brandy distilling), walk through the building's corridors and learn about its colorful past, or explore the diverse flora and fauna of Goričko. Deep underground, another treasure of the castle is hidden – a wine cellar with fine wines produced by the small local winemakers. And yes, they are available for tasting.

Murska Sobota Castle

Our journey continues into the center of Prekmurje: Murska Sobota. In the heart of the local city park, surrounded by mighty century-old oak trees, a true Renaissance gem awaits: Murska Sobota Castle

Looking at the four corner towers, you are instantly transported back to the times of the Szapary counts’ reign, at the same time captivated by the masterful illusionistic painting depicting the battle between the goddess of science and art and the god of war, displayed in the luxurious Baroque salon. Your next "Wow!"  is uttered upon seeing the magnificent eastern portal, which originally adorned a palace in Budapest and became part of the Murska Sobota Castle in the 19th century.

If you are interested in how people once lived along the Mura River, you simply cannot miss a visit to this castle. The Pomurje Museum in Murska Sobota, which is housed in the castle building, reveals just that. Art lovers are also in for a treat, as they are able to admire the legacy of the artistic photographer Jože Kološa and portraits of Slovenian Impressionists. There is no shortage of contemporary art either – this is provided by the Youth Information and Cultural Club, which also keeps a café inside the castle.

During the warmer months, the castle courtyard and the surrounding area are transformed into a unique backdrop for outdoor events. The Soboški dnevi festival is one of them and it certainly stands out. It is the perfect opportunity to party like the locals do and feel the true pulse of Prekmurje!

Rakičan Castle

For the next attraction, you only need to drive a few kilometers out of Murska Sobota. A fortification is said to have stood by the road in Rakičan as early as the Middle Ages. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, as soon as the danger of Turkish invasions had passed, it was transformed into a charming countryside mansion with a large courtyard.

Although it may not seem as popular as other castles in Pomurje, visiting it is a wonderful experience. Take a walk through the beautiful English park, exploring its educational trail, and you may even encounter some horses walking about. It is the perfect blend of historical charm and relaxed enjoyment of the Prekmurje countryside.

Lendava Castle

Looking for some true Pannonian romance? Then Lendava it is, with the next gem standing on top of a steep hill, overlooking the town! The mighty Lendava Castle is said to have watched over the town since the 12th century, having been ruled by the greatest nobles of the past. Some of them belonged to the Banffy family, which was for several centuries one of the most prestigious Hungarian noble families that significantly influenced the development of Lendava.

The castle’s mighty walls bravely withstood the attacks of the Turks, who caused severe damage but could never conquer it. The last owners, the Esterhazy family, gave it its current L-shape through extensive renovations.

And if there ever was a place where art lovers would get their money's worth, this is it! The Lendava Castle houses the Lendava Gallery-Museum, which exhibits a rich artistic heritage of local and many other artists. In recent years, the castle has also hosted exhibitions of the world's greatest names, making the visit practically a must.

Beltinci Castle

At first glance, Beltinci Castle may not seem so different from other Baroque castles in Prekmurje, but it is a real treasure trove of attractions!

It is marked by a turbulent history, full of Turkish invasions, which is why it was once protected by walls, four towers and a moat. But its greatest attraction is underground, where – as if out of an adventure film – it hides a couple of vaulted tunnels. One leads to the neighboring church while the other provides passage to the former castle granary.

Moreover, the exhibitions hosted here are quite unique compared with other castles of Pomurje; among other things, you can learn about the history of healthcare in Pomurje as well as see a collection of old bicycles.

After seeing those, make sure you take a stroll through the large park. In ancient times, as many as 800 exotic trees grew there, some of which are still thriving. Another special spot is the domed castle icehouse, which was once used for cooling down food and drinks. It is the only preserved building of its kind in Central Europe, so do not miss it!

Negova Castle

Finally, we move from Prekmurje to the equally idyllic Prlekija region. In Negova, just a stone's throw from Gornja Radgona, you can instantly travel back to the 11th century, when a simple wooden castle stood on top of a hill with a fairytale view. Today, the mighty Negova Castle stands there, having once been the oldest court in this part of the world. The pillar of shame in front of the building serves as a reminder of those times.

A thousand incredible stories are told by the castle rooms, where you can discover everything from the history of Negova to herbal exhibitions and displays of viticulture. There is also great news for those who prefer to explore beautiful places by bike; you can rent them at the castle!

The Negova Castle is also a must-see destination because of its traditional events – from the romantic Festival of Love with Penina Fejst and fragrant Herbal Days, to the lively Medieval Day. You will be hard pressed to find a better blend of local culture and cuisine.
